US online retailer Amazon launches a new shopping website in India called Junglee.com. This new shopping website, which means 'wild' in Hindi, offers over 12 million products from more than 14,000 Indian and global brands. Buyers need to make their purchases through a network of third-party suppliers either by ordering online or visiting them in person. This is a clever set-up, as it allows the new shopping website to sidestep government rules restricting foreign multi-brand retailers from operating in India. The shopping website does not sell products directly but only leads buyers to websites of retailers.

Saloni Nangia, President of Indian Research Consultancy at Technopak affirms that it is a clever way of getting into the Indian market that works by rules. Vice President of Amazon.com, Amit Agarwal, says that the initiative to offer a shopping website in India is aimed at giving customers a single online starting point. He says that they can shop for a wide selection of products sold by local and global retailers, making informed purchases.

The launch of Junglee.com comes after Amazon said that it was setting up its first warehouses (fulfilment centres) in India. These warehouses allow Amazon to store products and ship them swiftly.
